Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing Kancheepuram (IIITD&M Kancheepuram) is an Indian Institute of Information Technology created by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in 2007 with the mandate of pursuing design and manufacturing oriented engineering education and research and to facilitate and promote the competitive advantage of Indian products in global markets. It is one of the two IIITD&Ms, the other one being located in Jabalpur. The Institute is presently operating from its temporary campus within the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and will be moving to its permanent campus at Kelambakkam-Vandalur road near Chennai. Permanent campus construction activities are underway. The Institute offers interdisciplinary academic and research programs that integrate engineering design, manufacturing and management with information technology. With the unique mandate of excellence in IT and IT enabled design and manufacturing education and research, the institute is currently offering novel UG and PG programs which focus on IT and design and manufacturing aspects in the core engineering sectors.

Contents

B.Tech (UG) Programs Offered

The Institute is offering Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in three disciplines namely Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering (Design & Manufacturing) and Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing). These novel programs are first of its kind under graduate level degrees offered in the country with emphasis on design and manufacturing issues related to Computer Engineering, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering. The programs are designed based on the principle of "experiential learning" and exhaustive practice sessions supplement the courses learnt as a part of the curriculum. Admissions to the various UG programmes are based on All India Rank (AIR) in All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Counselling Board (CCB).[2]

M.Des (PG) Programs

IIITD&M Kancheepuram is offering Master of Design in Mechanical Systems and Electronic Systems from August 2010 onwards. The course is unique and designed to specialize mechanical and electrical/electronics engineers to specialize in domain specific design skills and create commercially viable electronic and mechanical products. The course is of 2 years duration and is first of its kind engineering oriented Design programme offered in India. Design programmes offered elsewhere in India concentrate more on aesthetic aspects of Design. India being a world leader in knowledge and service industries needs a strong foothold in the design industry to truly emerge as a world leader and a developed nation. The Institute functions with the objective creating world class designers both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The M.Des programs are designed to specialize electrical/electronics and mechanical engineers with skills that would be required to lead design teams involved in the creation of innovative and world class products. Admissions to these programs are based on GATE score and performance in Test and/or Interview.

Ph.D Programs

Doctoral degree programs in the broad areas of Computer Engineering, Electrical, Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are offered by the Institute. Ph.D research scholars are supported with institute assistance as per norms and work under the full time guidance of Institute faculty members. Interdisciplinary research in the areas of Robotics, Dynamics & Control, Mechanical Design, Fatigue and Fracture Machine, Tribo Design, Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge & Data Engineering, Image Processing, Theoretical Computer Science, Solar Energy, Photonics, Fiber Optics, Micro Electronics, CAD for digital circuits, Graph coloring problems and algorithms, Fuzzy Logic, etc. More details on areas of research and the programme can be had from the Institute website.

Laboratory & Research Infrastructure

The Institute supports some of the most modern and state of the art machines and equipments which are used by the students and scholars as part of their course and research work. Some of the laboratory equipments have been indigenously built by our students, staff and faculty members. A brief collection of the infrastructure available is given below.
